The celebration of national ice cream day (Sunday July 19, 2026) has encouraged the disclosure of the most popular ice cream flavours from around Scotland.
These figures are generated by taking into account ice cream sold in supermarkets, independent retailers and ice cream parlours across the country.
Argyll & The Isles third favourite ice cream is Belgian chocolate, with second place being awarded to Scottish tablet, and the top spot being taken by raspberry ripple.
We asked some local cafe’s if their customers followed the trend of raspberry ripple as a fan favourite. We also asked local cafe’s if this trend changes depending on whether locals or tourists are purchasing it.
Lastly, we enquired to local cafe’s regarding a hypothetical creation of a “Taste of Cowal” ice cream, and what unique ice cream they would create if asked to do this.
Local Cafe, ‘The Rock Cafe’ specialise exclusively in a more traditional Mr Whippy ice cream, resulting in their only ice cream flavour being vanilla, however, this does not stop them from experimenting with a range of different sauces to spice up their frozen treats.
The Rock admit that their raspberry sauce is a customer favourite, and claim it has distinct similarity to the Scottish favourite raspberry ripple flavour.
They mentioned that “We currently sell Mr Whippy ice cream, which is vanilla flavour only. However, we find that serving it with raspberry sauce is just as much of a hit with customers. So in fact, our No.1 best-selling option is the Cone 99 with raspberry sauce. (Similar to raspberry ripple).”
They also took the opportunity to describe their ideal ‘Taste of Cowal’ ice cream flavour. This ice cream would include Scottish Heather Honey, Sea Salt and Tablet. The elements of Cowal inspiring the ingredients within this desert are The Firth of Clyde encouraging the sea salt ingredient, Cowal’s heather-covered hills as local honey and handmade tablet also using caramel, the local honey and sea-salt again.
They went on to state “Taste of Cowal – Creamy Scottish heather honey ice cream, swirled with sea salt caramel and packed with soft sweet tablet pieces, inspired by the hills, coastline and sweet flavours of Cowal.”
