Could Cowal Gathering be staged for less?
George MacIntyre, Maryhill Glasgow

Editor – As the world famous Cowal Gathering is just a week away and reading last week’s article in the Observer, (£430k price tag as Cowal countdown begins), about the cost of staging the event, organisers could save themselves a lot of money. Why do all the tents and security need to be in a week before the event takes place? Glasgow City Council set up Glasgow Green for the World Pipe Band Championships on the Thursday, yet Cowal set up the week before. Then you have to question the £35 entry on the Saturday. What are you getting for that? Heavy Events and the pipe bands and drum majors, not as Cowal Gathering state the Cowal Pipe Band Championship. People need to remember that the Championship went in 2013 to Ireland and now the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association don’t run a Cowal Pipe Band Championship. The RSPBA West of Scotland Branch run a pipe band contest. Come on people of Cowal, if you’re not interested in saving this once famous event, step aside and let people who are interested in running it before it also disappears over the horizon.
