COUNCILLORS on a key committee are expected to receive a representation on an alternative proposal for Helensburgh’s Waterfront site ahead of a crunch meeting.
Vivien Dance, of Helensburgh Festive Lighting Charitable Trust, said that a document on the proposals would be sent to members of Argyll and Bute Council’s policy and resources committee.
A report saying that 94.8 per cent of respondents to a council consultation were against proposals for a supermarket on the site will be discussed by the committee on Thursday, October 15.
The charitable trust’s expression of interest was revealed in July, with plans for public event space, a skatepark and additional parking as a revenue stream.
At a public meeting convened by Helensburgh Community Council on Tuesday, October 13, Ms Dance also called on councillors to make community views heard at the committee meeting.
She said: “We have heard this evening about council officers making recommendations. They do that, but councillors make decisions.
“There are 10 councillors for Helensburgh and Lomond, and they have the right to speak at the policy and resources committee on Thursday to represent what has gone on in here this evening.
“I believe that one is definitely speaking. I am not sure about the other nine, but two are members of the committee. Others should all have requested to stand up and represent the people of Helensburgh.”
She then said: “Some may be aware of the expression of interest that has been made over the land for common good, and we are trying to follow that through.
“Today I have spent most of the day writing a brief summary to every member of the policy and resources committee.
“You can do that by emailing them, or by sending to committee services and asking for it to be distributed to all members. That document is on the expression of interest that we have put in.
“Hold their feet to the fire, and let’s get some sense into this.”
