Baird of Bute honours global pioneers and local hero

THE BAIRD of Bute Society is set to celebrate the achievements of some of Scotland’s most distinguished individuals at its annual Awards Dinner this afternoon.

This year’s event promises to be a memorable one, with three awardees taking part in a special panel discussion and giving presentations in Rothesay’s Discovery Centre cinema.

The panel discussion, will run from 2.30pm to 4.30pm and will feature three Scots whose extraordinary careers have left a mark on global science, technology, and industry.

One of the standout speakers is Professor Gillian Wright, the UK ATC Edinburgh scientist who serves as the European principal investigator for the MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument) on the James Webb Space Telescope. Professor Wright has been at the forefront of one of the most groundbreaking space missions in history, and she will share her experiences and insights from working on the James Webb Telescope, which has already begun transforming our understanding of the cosmos.

Another distinguished speaker is Professor Sir James Hough from Glasgow University, whose work was pivotal in the historic detection of gravitational waves. This groundbreaking discovery, which confirmed a major prediction of Einstein’s theory of relativity, changed the landscape of astrophysics forever. Professor Hough will be reflecting on this monumental achievement, as September 14 marks the tenth anniversary of the discovery.

Also taking part is Mr. Scott McLarty, Senior Vice-President of Spirit AeroSystems. Having started his career as an apprentice on the factory floor, Mr. McLarty’s career trajectory is nothing short of remarkable. Today, he leads one of the world’s largest manufacturers of aircraft fuselages, supplying both commercial and defence sectors. His presentation will highlight the importance of hard work, perseverance, and the opportunities available within the aerospace industry.

In addition to these prestigious speakers, the Baird of Bute Society will also present a special award to John Williams, a local naturist and photographer. Mr. Williams will be honoured for his outstanding efforts in promoting the natural beauty of the Isle of Bute through his photography and advocacy for the island’s unique environment.

The Awards Dinner promises to be a celebration of excellence, highlighting the achievements of both established figures and local heroes. Tickets for the panel discussion are available at the Discovery Centre, and all are welcome to attend.
