Boost for Dunoon CCTV in Crown Estate funding

Dunoon’s CCTV system is set for an upgrade after Argyll and Bute Council confirmed last week that nearly £1 million of Crown Estate funding had been allocated to support projects across the local region.

It’s understood that £90,000 of the monies will fund a project to add new, improved digital cameras in town centres, which will deliver enhanced analytics.

A spokesperson for Argyll and Bute Council explained: “The project will upgrade existing CCTV cameras in Dunoon to make them digitally compliant. There are no plans for additional cameras, but some of the existing ones will be relocated.

“The exact locations are still to be confirmed and will be agreed with the contractor. The budget for the project will be used to upgrade the CCTV systems in main towns across the council area.”

Also included in the Crown Estate funding was the allocation of £150,000 for resurfacing work at the Albert Pier car park in Rothesay, and £80,000 for Dunoon public realm.

A decision to allocate the funding was made at a meeting of the authority’s policy and resources committee last Thursday.

The Scottish Government confirmed in November that Argyll and Bute’s Crown Estate revenue allocation was over £2.3 million, some of which had already been allocated by the council.

In a report before the meeting, executive director Kirsty Flanagan said: “Further investment in local CCTV will be focused on additional functionality that enables local CCTV cameras to provide analytic data such as vehicle movements and footfall.

“Such data could be very valuable to inform future funding bids and support more data-led priorities for future investment in our town centres.”
