Bowlers celebrates Burns Night in fine style

Ardentinny Bowling Club marked Burns Night with a lively and well-attended celebration supper on Friday, January 30, with guests enjoying an evening of tradition, entertainment and good company.

Club president Dougie welcomed everyone before handing over to master of ceremonies, John Brint, who guided proceedings throughout the night. The evening began with the first toast, followed by the Selkirk Grace, delivered by Andy Taplin.

The ceremonial haggis was then paraded into the room by Ann and presented, along with a quaich filled with whisky, to Jim Robinson, who gave a superb rendition of the Address to the Haggis. Supper was then served, with haggis, neeps and tatties prepared and presented by the ladies of the entertainment committee, assisted by Keith and MC John.

As plates were cleared, guests were entertained by Robert, who performed a song and shared the story of the statue of Heilan’ Mary.

The post-supper programme began with Robert Devine delivering the Immortal Memory, followed by a self-penned poem from Alistair MacLean, which drew plenty of laughter from the audience. Dougie Menzies proposed the Toast to the Lasses, complete with a poem of his own, before Linda Taplin gave an entertaining and humorous Reply from the Lassies.

Musical contributions followed from Jim Robinson, who performed a selection of Burns songs, before everyone joined together for The Star of Rabbie Burns. To conclude the formal proceedings, Dougie offered a vote of thanks to the organisers, helpers and, in particular, the ladies who worked hard preparing, cooking and serving the supper. The evening then closed with a rousing rendition of Auld Lang Syne.

The celebrations continued with dancing and music provided by resident DJ Jum U, bringing a memorable Burns Night to an end.
