Brandanes put five past Rovers

THE DANES continued their good form with a convincing 5-1 victory over Cambusbarron Rovers at the weekend.

It was a scrappy start to the game, with both teams struggling to get the ball down in tough conditions.

The first bit of quality came from Danes skipper Sean Lawrence after eight minutes, beating his man down the left-hand side before fizzing the ball across goal, with striker Matt Leitch inches away from reaching the cross for a tap-in.

Two minutes later, Matt Leitch had another chance, as Jack McKirdy played a great pass over the top to put Leitch through one-v- one but the keeper saved his left footed effort.

But Cambusbarron came very close to taking the lead on 13 minutes, a delivery from a free kick on the edge of the box found Rovers’ six free at the back post, but his volley went narrowly wide.

Then Sean Lawrence came close to opening the scoring after 20 minutes,

combining well with Jack McKirdy down the left–his low right footed effort had the keeper scrambling but went wide of the post.

After half an hour it was the visitors that took the lead after being awarded a penalty.

The Rovers player was brought down following a short corner and their number 10 made no mistake from the spot, slotting it low to keeper William Lawrence right-hand side.

The Danes reacted well, though, and three minutes later Sean Lawrence was brought down on the edge of the box.

Lawrence got up to take the free-kick himself, his effort leaving the keeper rooted to the spot and tying the scores at 1-1.

And just before the half- time whistle the Danes took the lead.

Quick thinking by Jack McKirdy, playing a first- time pass in behind for right winger Guy Wheatley to run on to, who kept his composure and picked out Sean Lawrence with his cross to place the ball past the goalkeeper.

But Cambusbarron almost equalised four minutes into the second-

half, with a looping header from Rovers number three forcing a great save from keeper William Lawrence.

On 55 minutes, goalie Lawrence collected a Rovers cross and immediately spotted number 11 Guy Wheatley running through on goal.

Lawrence’s pass was perfect but Wheatley’s lobbed effort went over the bar.

64 minutes in and the Danes came close again, as Jack McKirdy brought down

a Cambusbarron goal-kick on his chest just inside his own half, before going past four men and teeing up Matt Leitch, who was unlucky not to score.

But the Danes pressure paid off on 70 minutes as Sean Lawrence forced the Rovers centre back into a mistake, before the impressive substitute Luke Tritschler nipped in to win the ball, passing to debutant Jamie Morrell who found Lawrence in the box.

Lawrence rolled his

defender before placing his effort low in to the bottom corner to complete his hat- trick.

Five minutes later the skipper was at it again, as his brother William produced an impressive pass to Donald McLean, who headed the ball first time in to the path of Sean who rounded the keeper and scored his and the Danes fourth of the day.

On 80 minutes the roles were reversed as Sean

Lawrence got on the end of a Luke Tritschler pass, finding himself through on goal but unselfishly squaring the ball for Donald McLean to tap home and make it five–rounding off a great afternoon for the Danes.

The club wished a big thanks to McBride’s Taxis on 503000 for being the match sponsor.

Next up is a tricky awayday in Kirkintilloch, where the Danes travel to take on Harestanes AFC.
