THE NEW season is well and truly underway at Innellan Golf Club, with a surge in participation seeing members out in force competing for early honours across a packed fixture list.
The Wednesday Series nine-hole stableford got things started, with Duncan Lauder claiming victory in week one with 17 points. Neil Ferguson took second on 15, just edging out Karen Mitchell, who sportingly conceded the position on countback.
Week two saw an impressive performance from Thomas Law, who topped the standings with 21 points. Mark McAleese finished second on 17, while Neil Ferguson continued his consistent form with 16 points for third.
The ladies’ competitions have also begun in encouraging fashion. In week one, Shonna Derrett led the way with 18 points, followed by Margaret Lauder on 15 and Margaret Gallagher on 12. Week two honours went to Katie Houston with 16 points, with Margaret Gallagher second on 14 and Margaret Lauder third on 15.
In the ladies’ 18-hole stableford, Derrett again showed her quality, taking first place with 27 points. Karen Mitchell matched that total but had to settle for second, while Mary Reid finished third.
Saturday competitions have delivered some standout scoring. In the opening event, Shonna Derrett produced a remarkable net 59 – including a three at the Rubicon – to take the win in style. Last year’s silversmith Harry Black was second with 66, and Andy Holland third with 70.
Week two switched to stableford format, with Russell Lees coming out on top with 37 points. Simon McMahon followed closely with 36, and Dan Wilkinson took third with 35. The Saturday series alternates between stroke play and stableford formats throughout the season.
Delayed winter competitions also took place in improved conditions. The January Medal was won by Dan Wilkinson with 36 points, with Russell Lees second on 35 and Andy Holland third, also on 35.
The February Medal saw Douglas Cooper take victory with an excellent 38 points. Scott Lauffer finished second on 36 – a notable round featuring five birdies and three no-scores – while Willie McCosh also carded 36 to claim third.
Meanwhile, the J Sharp Memorial Trophy went to Brian Emery with a fine score of 65. Robert Baxter was second on 67, narrowly ahead of Freddie Williams, who also posted 67.
