The Camanachd Association will host a special public talk celebrating the remarkable photographic legacy of the late Donald Mackay, whose work captured the spirit, people and places of shinty across generations. Camera at the Camanachd – Donald Mackay’s Legacy to Shinty will take place on Saturday 21st February at 12 noon.
Delivered in partnership with Shinty Memories Scotland, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and Shinty’s Story – Sgeul na Camanachd, the event will showcase newly digitised images drawn from Mackay’s extensive archive. His photographs chart the evolution of the sport on and off the field, offering an intimate record of community life, craftsmanship, tradition and athleticism.
The session will explore highlights from the digitisation project, revealing unseen material that will inform future refreshes of Shinty’s Story – Sgeul na Camanachd, a newly opened, bilingual, national exhibition at Bught Park, Inverness. Attendees will gain insight into Mackay’s eye for composition, his documentation of players and supporters, and the cultural value of his work for future generations.
Camanachd Association President, Burton Morrison said: “Stirling University’s meticulous digitisation work has safeguarded a remarkable part of our sporting heritage, and we are deeply grateful for their commitment. I also want to offer sincere thanks to Charlie Mackay, who, on behalf of his family, entrusted the Camanachd Association with Donald’s outstanding photographic collection. His decision ensures that Donald’s life’s work, amassed over more than three decades at the heart of our sport, will be preserved and appreciated for generations to come. Our appreciation extends as well to Shinty Memories Scotland and to Hugh Dan MacLennan, whose steady support and expertise were vital in bringing this project to fruition. I would encourage everyone with an interest in shinty, history, or visual storytelling to join us for what promises to be a tremendous event.” Tickets are free, with places allocated on a first-come basis. Registration is available via Google Form or by texting 07926 237825.
This event forms part of ongoing work to preserve, interpret and celebrate shinty’s heritage through digital innovation and community storytelling. All are welcome to attend.
