Competition heats up at Rothesay Golf Club

IT HAS been another lively and successful couple of weeks at Rothesay Golf Club, with strong turnouts, close competition, and impressive fundraising efforts highlighting the very best of the club.

11 teams of four took to the course for the Ben Ward Memorial Texas Scramble, producing some excellent scoring on the day.

Claiming top spot with a superb score of 54 was Stuart Brady, Richard Murphy, Dane Williamson and Richie More. Just one shot adrift on 55 came the old firm quartet of Geo Reynolds, George Hanson, Derek Smith and Allan Smith Snr., narrowly missing out in what proved to be a tightly contested event.

Also finishing on 55 and taking third place was Iain and Owen Simpson, Stephen Reynolds and Malky Brown, rounding off a competitive podium in an enjoyable and well-supported memorial competition.

This past weekend saw a fantastic field of 74 players compete in the ever-popular William Bremner Allison Memorial Trophy, held in aid of Clydeside Action Against Asbestos.

As ever, Jethro and his mum organised the event splendidly, helping to raise a significant sum for the very deserving charity.

This year’s winner was John McArthur with an excellent 41 points. Runner-up was Stuart Wilson on 38 points. Third place went to Ian Lowery with 37, edging into the prizes ahead of Graham McArthur, who also finished on 37 points and took fourth.

The scratch prize was won by Tommy Reynolds, whose impressive performance would have earned him second place overall had he not claimed the scratch honours.

Elsewhere, the John Murray Summer League continues to draw strong midweek participation, with fixtures played on Wednesdays and Fridays.

On 5 June, Aidan Pellegrotti claimed victory with a fine net 70 (88-18), just edging out Hughie Charker, who also finished on net 70.

The May 29 competition saw Jim Milliken take top honours with an excellent net 68 (82-14). Stuart McLean followed closely behind with a net 69 (78-9) to secure the runner-up spot.

Looking ahead, next weekend marks the first qualifying round for the Club Championship, the Atlantic Tankard and the Sunnindale Bowl. With form building across the membership, anticipation is high for what promises to be another competitive chapter in the Rothesay golfing calendar.

A spokesperson for the club wished the best of luck to all competitors.
