BUS shelters in Argyll and Bute could be used for a campaign to ensure better treatment of council workers, a councillor has said.
Councillor Gordon Blair (SNP, Cowal) asked the question of one of the authority’s officials and said that verbal abuse had “a knock-on effect”.
Mark Calder, the council’s project manager, responded that he did not see why Councillor Blair’s suggestion could not be taken up in future.
The discussion took place at a meeting of the council’s Bute and Cowal area committee on Tuesday, March 3.
Councillor Blair said: “I have had discussions at a meeting regarding staff being abused by members of the public.
“It is less difficult for staff in an office environment to deal with that, but for our staff out and about, like traffic wardens it is more difficult.
“How do we get that message out – don’t talk to our staff the way you are talking to them?
“I had suggested using the bus shelters as an asset in which there are signs up and we can use that as a reminder to members of the public?
“It has a knock-on effect across all of society. I saw a sign [elsewhere] saying that if you are cheeky to the nurses it has an effect on people in the waiting room, and their colleagues, and there will be a reduction in service and care through no fault of the staff.”
Mr Calder responded: “I do not see why not.”
