DUNOON’S own Barry Campbell has taken the next step in his career as a footballer, signing for Port Glasgow Juniors.

The youngster was last on the books at Albion Rovers, but has made a move closer to home after leaving the youth ranks at Greenock Morton in the summer in search of adult football.

Now the utility man is on the books of the Undertakers as he aims to nail a place down for the second-half of the campaign.

Speaking to this newspaper after signing, Barry said: “I signed with the Port this week after leaving Albion this January.

“The club were really good with me and the fans where unbelievable week in week out, but I’m a young footballer and I need to play minutes, so after not playing a lot I decided the best option for my career was to go somewhere I could play games for the rest of this season.

“Port Glasgow got in contact, I have known the manger for a while now and always wanted to work under him, and I’m happy to go enjoy my football and see what happens in the summer.”

Port manager, Tam Jamieson, previously tried to sign Campbell after seeing his form for Morton, and after a brief spell at the Rovers he has got his man as they aim for promotion from the West of Scotland Football League third division.

In the Port’s first game since Barry’s arrival they produced a 1-0 win over fellow title hopefuls, Craigmark Burntonians, to go top of the league.

Juniors’ Aidan Duffy produced the only goal of the game from the spot, but man of the match went to seasoned veteran, Efe Ambrose–the AFCON and Scottish Premiership winner turning out for the Port Juniors at the age of 37 after an impressive career in the game.

The result has the Port two points clear at the summit, albeit Craigmark hold three games in hand over the Undertakers.
