Doubts over Helensburgh banking hub location

DOUBT remains over the permanent location of Helensburgh’s banking hub after the property for which it applied for advertising consent was advertised itself.

The former Bank of Scotland premises at 26 Colquhoun Square is listed for rent on the website of commercial real estate developers CBRE.

Bank of Scotland closed its Helensburgh branch for the final time on Tuesday, March 24. Argyll and Bute Council recently approved an advertising consent application from Cash Access UK for signage at the building.

A second application, from the same applicant, for planning permission for changes to the front and rear façade of the same premises, remains under consideration.

An official from Cash Access UK, operators of the banking hub, recently gave presentations at meetings of Argyll and Bute Council’s Helensburgh and Lomond community planning group, and Helensburgh and Lomond area committee.

The banking hub currently operates out of Helensburgh and Lomond Civic Centre, where residents can deposit cash and cheques and withdraw cash, as well as speak to representatives of some High Street banks.

A spokesperson for Cash Access UK said: “We cannot confirm any details about the location of the permanent hub in Helensburgh at this stage. A temporary hub is currently open at the Helensburgh and Lomond Civic Centre.”

It is understood that the search for a property is progressing, but nothing will be announced until all legal procedures are complete.

The listing of 26 Colquhoun Square on CBRE’s website said: “The property is a single storey standard high street retail unit with dual entrances.

“Located on Colquhoun Square with rear access from the car park. Internally, there is a large open complemented by interview rooms, a secure business cash room, storerooms, and staff amenities.

“We are verbally informed by the local rating authority that the current rateable value of the shop is £33,000. Interested parties are to make their own enquiries with the local authority.

“The property is a semi-detached retail unit, located just off the main square in Helensburgh. It has a hair salon and barbers to one side with a gym on the other side. Adjacent to the property is Helensburgh Parish Church.

“Helensburgh offers a blend of natural beauty and a vibrant community. With easy access from Glasgow, it’s a popular destination for both locals and visitors.

“The town boasts a charming centre with a mix of shops, cafes and a strong local economy.”
