Dunoon’s main swimming pool will close for two months later this year, so that essential work can be carried out.
Riverside Leisure Centre members were informed through email this week by liveArgyll, the charity based leisure trust which runs the facility, that maintenance is currently scheduled to take place in the centre over an eight week period, following the October school holidays.
A portion of the notification read: We want to provide you with advance notice of this temporary facility closure and make you aware of the arrangements were putting in place to minimise disruption.
During this period, you will have full access to the Queens Hall gym and all other liveArgyll facilities. Unfortunately for swimming type activity, limited options are available however members are reminded that membership allows access to all liveArgyll facilities throughout Argyll and Bute and also gives you access to leisure facilities across Scotland at no extra charge.
Earlier this year a plan to explore a possible site for a brand new leisure centre, including a swimming pool, was set in motion after Argyll and Bute Council put aside, 200,000 for a business case for the new facility.
Riversides current health suite facility has been closed to the public for over a year. The steam room, jacuzzi and sauna were shut back in March 2024 for an estimated three months as a comprehensive refurbishment was planned. But when work was due to begin unforeseen building fabric issues were detected and the refurbishment was halted.
The building, which is owned by Argyll and Bute Council and run by charitable trust liveArgyll, underwent a full inspection by specialist engineers and their report was submitted to the local authority at the end of last year.
With news of an eight week closure come October liveArgyll issued the following statement asking members for feedback regarding the possibility of a new facility.
It read: As you may be aware Argyll and Bute Council and liveArgyll are pro-actively reviewing the future of Leisure services in Cowal. The Council have allocated a sum of monies to explore the business case for any future provision. As part of this exercise we would like to hear from our users. A modern Leisure Service is wide ranging and covers a range of benefits not limited to but including health and well-being, social impact, education and fun. What would you like to see? We are seeking comments, suggestions and ideas to help shape any future service.
