Dunoon youngster continues lockdown kindness with hospital treat boxes

A Dunoon lad who began spreading kindness during lockdown has continued his efforts by delivering treat boxes to staff at Cowal Community Hospital.

David Gillan, a Kirn Primary School pupil, was just three years old when the Covid-19 pandemic began, but quickly became determined to do something positive for others.

During lockdown, he created rainbow pictures for neighbours’ windows and helped make treat boxes for emergency service workers, leaving them safely at doors when people were unable to enter public buildings.

Since then, David Gillan has kept up the tradition, delivering treat boxes to Cowal Community Hospital Accident and Emergency department every Easter and Christmas.

When David receives treats he cannot eat himself, he makes sure they are added to the boxes so others can enjoy them.

Evan Beswick, chief officer for Argyll and Bute Health and Social Care Partnership, said: “David’s story is truly inspiring. His kindness, generosity and determination to give something back to the NHS and care staff over so many years have touched everyone who has met him. He embodies the very best of our communities, and on behalf of all our staff, I want to thank David and his family for the kindness and positivity they continue to bring.”

David and his family have also spoken warmly about A&E consultant Dr Colin Barrett, who has supported David in the past and remains one of the people he especially likes to visit when making his deliveries.

The family praised Dr Colin Barrett for his kindness and the time he gives to David and other patients. When David became seriously unwell at a young age, Dr Barrett acted quickly to support his transfer to the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow.

Dr Colin Barrett said: “David is an exceptional young person. His thoughtfulness and compassion for others are remarkable, and his visits bring a huge lift to both patients and staff. It has been a privilege to see the happiness he brings through such simple but meaningful acts of kindness.”

During the pandemic, David Gillan also dressed up every Thursday as different local heroes — including police officers, doctors, ambulance drivers, firefighters and ferry captains.

His efforts have since been recognised by his school, local community organisations and national events, including a spotlight at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

David Gillan continues to bring joy to others through Highland dancing, performing for nurses, patients and residents in hospitals and care homes across the area.

At Christmas, he also donated bags of toys to children in hospital and performed for staff on the wards.
