Ever-shrinking facilities

Editor – I read the recent letter about the ever-shrinking facilities at our local leisure centre, and I must commend the writer for managing to squeeze more sense into one column than LiveArgyll have squeezed equipment into the Queen’s Hall gym.

As a fellow member, I can confirm the only thing getting heavier these days is the membership fee. The weights certainly aren’t. In fact, I suspect if they get any lighter, they’ll begin floating toward the mythical steam room — perhaps to join the legendary hot tub in whatever dimension our facilities keep vanishing into.

The idea of 24-hour fob access is hardly revolutionary. It’s standard practice in gyms across the country, and last I checked, a door that opens doesn’t require a committee, a feasibility study, and three rounds of public consultation. If the council can operate street lights on a timer, surely a gym door shouldn’t require sorcery.

Until improvements are made, I fear members will continue to experience more resistance from management than from the machines.
