For Bute volunteers recognised with top award

FOR BUTE has been named Volunteer Team of the Year at the Argyll and Bute Third Sector Interface Volunteer of the Year Awards.

The charity received the accolade at a ceremony held in Dunoon Burgh Hall on Friday, June 26, in recognition of the work carried out by its volunteer team to support projects and organisations across the Isle of Bute.

In a statement, For Bute said it was very honoured to receive the award.

The organisation said: “For Bute is very honoured to have been nominated and would like to thank all who have done so and would also like to thank all who support the shop during the year to make this possible.”

The award comes as the charity continues to distribute funding to a wide range of local initiatives.

Among its latest donations is £8,500 for this year’s Bute Noir crime writing festival, which celebrates its tenth edition from August 7–9 at the Glenburn Hotel. The festival has grown from small beginnings in the library, museum and Print Point to become an internationally recognised event attracting authors from around the world.

For Bute has also provided £1,000 towards recording oral histories, memories and local stories for inclusion in the restored red telephone box information kiosk at Port Bannatyne. The restoration of the kiosk itself is being funded by the BID and Port Bannatyne Development Trust.

Other recent grants include £1,000 to Rothesay Horticultural Society to support this year’s flower show on August 15 at the Isle of Bute Parish Church, £800 to Bute Shinty Club to help four young players attend the annual Shinty Summer Camp at Glenalmond College near Perth, and £180 for repairs to the railings at the Viewfinder Point at Chapelhill.

Funding has also been provided towards a new heating system and eight radiators at St Andrews Catholic Church in Rothesay, creating a warm space for worship and community events.

For Bute raises money through its charity shop at 39 Victoria Street, Rothesay, which is open Monday to Saturday from 10am until 4pm. The organisation also carries out house clearances, cleaning and preparing properties for sale in exchange for their contents, with proceeds from sales in the shop going back into community projects across the island.
