ARGYLL’s iconic George Hotel in Inveraray is in the running to be named Scotland’s best pub in the so-called Rural Oscars.
It’s the latest chapter in the storybook of the George, saved from closure in a £3m deal last summer.
The best pub title is part of the Countryside Alliance Awards, where voting is currently rolling out across Scotland. Thousands of nominations have been shortlisted to 30 businesses over five categories.
The businesses are judged on a range of criteria, including their passion and commitment, sense of community, championing local produce, and the energy and diversity of their business.
Now in their 19th year, these awards are seen as a vital way of helping to celebrate rural businesses that go the extra mile and support their local economy.
Countryside Alliance Scotland Director Jake Swindells said: “Once more, we have been blown away by the number of nominations this year. So many wonderful businesses have been sent in by the public. Every business has an important story to tell.”
“The secret to the Rural Oscars’ popularity is that they honour the people involved in these businesses, and not just their produce or services. At this critical time for so many rural businesses, it is vital we all show our support in whatever way we can. We encourage as many people as possible to get voting.”
The George was taken over last summer by Charlie Maclachlan and Sam Wignell of Fyne Hospitality.
They say they have a simple vision: preserve the heritage, elevate the experience, and ensure The George remains a celebrated destination for generations to come.
Mr Maclachlan told this newspaper: “The George Hotel is more than just a building, it’s the beating heart of Inveraray, steeped in character and beloved by locals and visitors alike.”
Mr Wignell added: “From its award-winning food and vibrant pub atmosphere to its historic rooms and unbeatable setting on Loch Fyne, The George has all the ingredients of a world-class hotel.”
The champions will be announced at an event in Edinburgh in May, ahead of the UK final at the House of Lords in July.
