Greene King upgrades Helensburgh hotel entrance design

A HELENSBURGH hotel is set to install a new-look entrance after applications for planning permission and listed building consent were approved.

Greene King, which owns the Ardencaple Hotel, proposed to replace the existing side entrance to the Gareloch Road premises with a new glazed extension, which is accessible through its car park.

No representations, expressing objection or support, were received from the public by Argyll and Bute Council during the planning process.

One of the authority’s planning officers said in a handling report: “This application seeks approval for the removal of a non-original glazed entrance foyer and porch with a replacement entrance foyer and porch.

“The existing glazed entrance foyer and porch are located to the side of the existing property within a recessed/courtyard area. The existing glazed entrance foyer and porch form a timber glazed lean-to type conservatory with single pitched glazed roof with areas of felt.

“The existing glazed entrance foyer and porch are considered to be in poor condition and do not positively contribute to the character of the existing listed building.

“The replacement entrance foyer and porch will be largely the same footprint, however, with a very slightly enlarged porch area.

“The massing of the replacement entrance foyer and porch will have a flat roof that will line through with the existing flat roof element behind the entrance foyer in-lieu of a lean-to approach.

“The replacement entrance foyer and porch will have glazing to the front elevation and side elevations to the porch, and the front elevation of the porch will have glazed double doors with glazing either side. The flat roof will have a central double glazed roof light.”

The official added: “Based on the above polices in light of the proposed replacement entrance foyer and porch it is considered that the replacement is an uplift to the existing entrance foyer and porch, the massing and scale is more appropriate and ties in with existing roof heights, the materials are considered to be high quality and again an uplift to the existing materials.

“It is considered that the replacement is an appropriate addition that enhances and protects the character of the existing listed building.”
