COUNCIL officials plan to install roller shutter doors at Helensburgh’s public toilets to prevent vandalism from taking place.
The system for payments at the door is also set to be restored at the pier facilities once the shutters have been set up.
A report has also revealed that a consultation is earmarked for how Argyll and Bute Council can use CHORD legacy funding to improve the town’s Colquhoun Square.
A councillor recently spoke in favour of installing picnic benches in the square, although a community councillor expressed scepticism.
The details feature in an update from the council’s roads and infrastructure services department, along with information on ongoing works in parts of Helensburgh and Lomond.
The document said: “We are looking to install roller shutter doors at this facility [the toilets] to prevent ongoing vandalism issues. Once these are installed, we will have the payment door system repaired.
“An online survey [on Colquhoun Square] should be available shortly on the council website. It will run for four weeks.
“We’re keen to hear people’s views on potential improvement options for the square. This is in the context of just under £60,000 of available CHORD legacy funding.”
During the council’s Helensburgh and Lomond area committee meeting in March, Councillor Math Campbell-Sturgess (SNP, Helensburgh and Lomond South) said: “As part of that fund, we should look at picnic benches, because we have so many events in the square revolving around food, and a shortage of places to sit and eat.
“It is something we should look at, because the more people can stay and have something to eat, the more they can make use of the square.”
Cameron Foy, of Helensburgh Community Council, responded: “I think there would be concern about picnic benches in the square, as the tables would add to the floor space being taken up, rather than go around the edges.
“That would affect some events taking place, to put up stages and rides, and it might not be very popular with residents and cafes in the square.”
The report from roads and infrastructure services added: “We are installing around 70 metres of new pipe along with inspection chambers at Shore Road, Shandon which will help to alleviate historic drainage/flooding issues.
“The old [electric vehicle charger] in the Luss Estates car park has now been removed at their request. Our new charger in Glen Loin 2 should hopefully be up and running soon.
“We are working through some contractual issues with the installer and supplier – a part is on order and should arrive on April 7.”
