Helensburgh’s former La Scala gets go-ahead for repaint

PLANS to paint the front of Helensburgh’s former La Scala cinema building, ahead of its planned reopening as a pub, have been approved.

Argyll and Bute Council has awarded planning permission and listed building consent for the work to take place at the premises at 8 James Street.

The former cinema and Logie Baird bar building, which, apart from a brief spell as The Dapper Dug, has lain empty since 2020, is due to reopen as The Comet, managed by Amber Taverns.

A council officer said in a handling report: “The proposal is for the redecoration of the existing facade, by painting the fascia, columns and moulds. Initially the applicant proposed to repaint the front elevation in colour RAL ‘No 6004’ (blue green).

“However, the proposed colour scheme would be out of character to the existing Art Deco building and after discussions and concerns with the planning department, it was agreed Art Deco buildings tend to always be of a white/cream colour scheme and this building historically has been cream.

“Therefore, the applicant agreed to the amended colour scheme to reflect and respect the heritage of the building using colour RAL 9003 ‘signal white’ for the exterior of the building and the use of the RAL 6004 ‘blue/green’ as an accent colour which is more in character and style of these types of buildings.

“The re-opening of the former public house and redecoration of the existing building offers preservation and restoration as the historic building if left may be at risk of falling into disrepair.

“Additionally, it will offer revitalization of the community by providing a social hub and giving the local community job creation, business opportunities and boost local tourism.”

The officer added: “I find the proposal to be an upgrade and will not have a detrimental impact upon the fabric of the building or its external appearance acceptable in this instance and raises no adverse impact on the character and/or historic value of the building or the wider steetscene.

“It is considered the proposal is acceptable to the host property and the surrounding area and will have no significant adverse effects on the listed building or conservation area.”
