Highland Famine Talk Brings History to Life in Inveraray

MEMBERS of Inveraray History Society gathered at the town’s church hall for a thought-provoking talk on the Great Highland Famine.

The presentation was delivered by author Willie Orr, from Benderloch, who explored the causes and consequences of one of the most challenging periods in Highland history.

Mr Orr introduced two key figures central to the story – Sir Charles Trevelyan, a senior Treasury official responsible for government response, and John Campbell, factor to the Duke of Argyll, who oversaw vast estates across the west

coast and islands.

The talk drew comparisons with the Irish Potato Famine, detailing the devastating impact of crop failure, economic decline and political decisions. Mr Orr described scenes of extreme hardship, including starving families unable to access food supplies held under guard.

He also highlighted the wider context, including the collapse of industries such as kelp and the decline in fishing, which left many communities heavily reliant on potatoes.

Attention then turned to the Highland experience, where similar crop failures contributed to further depopulation and the acceleration of the Highland Clearances. As factor, John Campbell was described as a powerful and often feared figure, responsible for overseeing evictions that forced many families to emigrate, particularly to Canada.

The lasting impact of these events on Argyll’s population and development was also discussed.

Members of the audience contributed personal reflections, with some sharing memories passed down through generations.

One attendee described the account as “uncomfortable” to hear, but acknowledged the importance of understanding the past.

The evening concluded with thanks to Mr Orr for what was described as a well-researched and engaging presentation.

The society’s next meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 14 at 2pm in the Nicoll Hall. Anna Magnusson will be in conversation with Joyce Deans, a wartime evacuee, in a talk titled The Time of Our Lives. Non- members are welcome to attend for a £5 fee.
