Kilmacolm park upgrades proposed for Birkmyre Park

A series of improvement works will be undertaken at Birkmyre Park in Kilmacolm – if they are given the go ahead by Inverclyde councillors at a meeting this week.

Repairs to timber on park buildings (£15,000), floodlight upgrades at the multi-use games area (£15,000) and enhanced CCTV provision (£7,000) have been proposed for the public space.

It follows a recent process of community engagement which was carried out to inform how £37,000 of Birkmyre Trust reserves should be invested in the site.

The exercise was designed to capture a broad and representative range of views from park users and residents, with the intention of supporting the local authority in its role as trustee to determine how best to use available funds.

A report to Thursday’s full council summit explained: “The engagement process comprised drop-in sessions, on site posters and an online survey conducted between January 19 and 30, 2026.

“In total, 168 responses were received on the proposed improvement options, alongside 109 detailed open text comments, 106 expressions of interest in future involvement and demographic information from 166 participants.

“Headline results indicate strong support for essential maintenance works, with particular emphasis on repairs to timber features on park buildings, enhancements to path lighting and other core asset management priorities.”

Elected members will be asked to agree the work takes place but this will be subject to the costs being contained within the available reserves.

It has also been recommended the enhancement of path lighting is investigated with future funding opportunities in mind and the balance is reviewed annually to identify further opportunities to deliver projects on the prioritised list.

Additionally, it has been suggested the trustees work in partnership through officers of the inclusive communities service to engage with local constituted organisations, including the community council and civic trust, to bid for external funding to implement additional initiatives.
