Mull restaurant wins approval for residents’ lounge extension

A RESTAURANT on Mull has been given the go-ahead to make upgrades to its premises, including installing a residents’ lounge.

Management of The Inn at Port Nan Gael also requested planning permission from Argyll and Bute Council for a porch as well as internal alterations and an extension to the existing shop.

The council has now approved the application, with no objections or expressions of support received from the public during the planning process.

A planning officer said in a handling report: “The application site comprises the existing building of The Inn at Port Nan Gael, an established restaurant with letting accommodation, staff accommodation and an adjoining shop.

“The site is set back to the east of the public road, with a large parking and turning area sited between the property and the A849 public road. There are a number of residential properties to the north and southeast of the site.

“The area immediately to the south of the site comprises an established camping area with motorhome and caravan stances and holiday pods.

“The premises as existing comprises a restaurant, letting bedrooms, staff accommodation and associated facilities, and a shop.

“This application is seeking to secure planning permission for the erection of single storey extensions in the form of a porch upon the principal elevation, an extension upon the rear elevation to form a residents’ lounge, and an extension upon the side elevation to form an extension to the existing shop.”

The report added: “The proposed shop extension would be associated with the facilities and accommodation that are provided at the wider site of The Inn at Port Nan Gael and the adjacent campsite immediately to the south of the application site.

“The proposed development would assist in supporting the existing adjacent land uses, as well as serving the residential properties and existing community within the wider Pennyghael area and beyond.

“In this case, due to the remote location of the application site, there would be no adverse impact upon any town or commercial centres.

“The proposed extension to the existing shop would serve the day-to-day needs of the local community and would be associated with existing recognised tourist facilities that are present within the vicinity of the application site.”
