COUNCILLORS will request a report on the cost and status of works in Oban’s Argyll Square after unanimous agreement at a meeting.
Councillor Amanda Hampsey (Conservative, Oban South and the Isles) moved a motion asking that a report was brought before local councillors.
The motion was seconded by Councillor Julie McKenzie (Independent, Oban North and Lorn) and had no amendments moved, meaning that it became the decision of Argyll and Bute Council’s Oban Lorn and the Isles area committee.
The committee held its meeting on Wednesday, March 11.
Speaking to the motion, Councillor Hampsey said: “The area committee has not received a single formal report setting out the overall financial position, along with a clear update on delivery.
“Members have a duty to scrutinise how public money is spent, and that is very difficult when the information is not provided.
“The motion is straightforward. It does not seek to direct officers on how to carry out their work; it simply asks that an update is provided in a report.
“This will allow councillors to see the costs to date and the current status of works, including what has been completed and what remains to be delivered.
“There has been a great deal of public interest and it is reasonable that members are provided with information so that we can carry out our responsibilities. This is about good governance, accountability and the use of public funds.”
Councillors also agreed unanimously to a motion by Councillor Andrew Vennard (Conservative, Oban North and Lorn), seconded by Councillor Hampsey, requesting a report on repairs to pontoon facilities at Oban’s North Pier.
The repairs were required as a result of Storm Eowyn in January 2025. That report will be requested for the area committee’s next meeting in June.
