Only one Argyll community council faces August election

ONLY one community council in the entirety of Argyll and Bute needs to hold an election in August, the area’s council has reported.

Community councils across the area were required to re-elect office bearers this summer, with nominations having been open through most of June.

But only Cove and Kilcreggan Community Council has more nominees than spaces, with some community councils only having one or two candidates.

The vote for Cove and Kilcreggan, which has 23 candidates for 16 spaces, will take place by post, with votes required to arrive with Argyll and Bute Council’s chief executive by 4pm on Thursday, August 20.

Every other community council will now automatically elect all candidates who were declared, with no vote needed.

In Mid Argyll, Kintyre and the Islands, only one candidate was nominated for West Loch Fyne Community Council, while North Knapdale Community Council had two candidates.

There was also a single candidate for Seil and Easdale Community Council, and two for Lismore Community Council, in Oban Lorn and the Isles.

In Bute and Cowal, Ardentinny Community Council had only three candidates, while Cairndow and Hunter’s Quay Community Councils had four candidates each.

Arrochar, Tarbet and Ardlui Community Council had the lowest candidate count in Helensburgh and Lomond, with five people nominated.

For every uncontested community council, a note is published saying: “The following candidates remain validly nominated for the above community council area as hereinafter mentioned and, as not more than the required number of candidates remains validly nominated there will be no poll therein and not later than 11am on the day of the election, the said candidates shall be declared to be elected community councillors.”

In relation to Cove and Kilcreggan Community Council, Argyll and Bute Council chief executive Pippa Milne said: “The persons entitled to vote at these elections are the persons registered in the Register of Electors in force as at June 1, 2026 for the community council area.

“A person whose name is so registered may not vote if the entry in the register gives as the date on which they will attain the age of 16 years as later than the day of the election.

“Electors will be sent a postal ballot paper and will require to return this to me by not later than 4pm on Thursday, August 20 if their votes are to be counted.”
