Plans submitted for new building at RNAD Coulport

PLANS have been submitted for a new building at RNAD Coulport for warehousing, offices and training purposes.

The secretary of state for defence is listed as the applicant for planning permission from Argyll and Bute Council, with the bid now being considered.

Officers from the local authority are expected to rule on the proposals by early June, with the public now able to view the plans and submit feedback.

A supporting statement by planning agents Zander Planning said: “The site lies within RNAD Coulport, which is situated on the eastern bank of the Loch Long.

“The loch is enclosed by steep glen sides with land cover that includes pasture fields with hedges on the lower levels of the glen, heathland and woodland on the higher ground.

“The proposed development is situated inside the secure line of RNAD Coulport. The site is generally characterised as an industrialised complex including a number of industrial buildings, offices and accommodation for military staff.

“The application site was previously developed and is largely hardstanding and car parking and was utilised as a helicopter landing pad.

“There is also a small building less than 100sqm on the northwestern boundary of the site which is a steel framed shed which is to be demolished. Part of the site is also covered by existing vegetation on the south and west of the site.

“Access to the site is taken from the existing restricted internal road network within the naval base. The internal road network connects to the external road network via a security gate that exists onto the B833 at Shore Road.”

The statement added: “The height and form of the proposed building is appropriate to the location and immediately surrounding buildings.

“The applicant has provided a range of elevation drawings and sections in support of the application. It is considered that the development is appropriate to its location and surroundings.

“The building has been designed to complement the location and surrounding area. The proposed building is considered to be an acceptable form which whilst modern in design, enhances the character of location. The location and height of the building would not result in any visual impacts on the wider location.”
