A NEW campaign is shining a spotlight on the wisdom and graft of our senior farmers and crofters.
Charity RSABI has launched Ploughing On, a winter-long initiative celebrating the people who have spent decades working the land—and reminding them how valued they are.
The drive comes at a time when many older farmers say they’re anxious about the future, with worries ranging from rising costs to possible inheritance tax changes on the horizon.
RSABI says winter can be especially tough: shorter days, bad weather and isolation can make even the most resilient feel cut off.
“Farming can be lonely at any age,” said Carol McLaren, RSABI’s Chief Executive. “But for those in their senior years, winter brings added challenges. We want to celebrate their contribution, share their stories, and help people look out for one another.”
The campaign will share stories and memories from men and women who’ve seen farming through boom and bust, fair weather and foul—passing on lessons to the next generation.
RSABI will also release short videos highlighting lifelong contributions to farming and crofting— aimed at inspiring younger people while acknowledging those who’ve carried the load for so long.
As temperatures drop and fuel bills bite, the charity is asking everyone in the farming community to keep an eye on older neighbours—especially those living alone.
“A call, an offer of help, even just a friendly chat at the gate can lift someone’s day,” said Ms McLaren. “We want people to feel valued, not like a burden.”
