Port Bannatyne Golf Club Rothesay Motor Services Winter League report

Results from the Rothesay Motor Services Winter League rolled in at the weekend with week four throwing up a few surprises, a ‘scudding and a skelping’ according to Port Bannatyne Golf Club (PBGC) officials.

First up, Roddie Leitch & Chrissy Lawrence took on Matt McLean (s) & Martin Young. This was anything but close for the first 12 holes as although they were playing really well, Roddie & Chrissy found themselves 3 down at the turn. Things got worse, losing the 11th to a great birdie, the younger pair then won 5 of the last 6 holes to scrape a half match.

Game two saw the unbeaten Sam Jamieson & Iain McFarlane take on Robert McArthur & Gordy McIntyre. A close tie most of the way round with Sam & Iain taking the spoils with a good 2&1 victory to keep their great form going.

Third out was Ewan Irvine & Duncan Lyon v Davie Driver & Graham Fisher. On paper this should have been close encounter, possibly even favouring Ewan and Duncan with all the shots they were receiving, but it was Davie & Graham who handed out a scudding, winning convincingly 6&4.

Sean Lawrence & Colin Renfrew (s) v Donald Standaloft (s) & Gordon Currie were next out in the fourth game. There was a barrel load of shots given away in this encounter and Sean along with Colin took full advantage of them, running away with a 4&2 victory.

fifth out was David Kilpatrick & Neil Mckirdy v Al Stewart & Hector Whitelaw and with a nip and tuck fight all the way round, this one was a tied match after 18 holes.

Stuart Gilchrist & Kalum Ledicott then raced into a 3 up lead against John Whitelaw and Alex Morrison Cowan in game six, but were pegged back to all square after 17 and it was John & Alex who took the 18th to win 1 up.

But the day’s ‘skelping’ was handed out by the in-form Graham Dunn & Davie Rutherford when they beat Carl Kelly & Colin Muir 5&4, in an extremely one sided affair.

To follow on, David Greer & Neil Whitelaw took on Larry Devine & Stephen Dunn in game eight. It was close the whole round, with both pairs missing chances to take the game by the scruff of the neck as they played out a half match.

Last out was John Black & Matty Dunn, who played Stewart Izat on his own, as partner Phil Williams couldn’t make it over on the ferry. Stewart dug in and played well for 14 holes, keeping himself in it, but wise heads on broad shoulders saw John & Matt run out 3&2 winners.

A spokesperson for PBGC said: “Thanks as always to Roddie and Hazel for the bar and the fantastic food, Duncan and Graham for keeping their great form course in superb condition, and of course Leighton and all the family from Rothesay motor services for their continued support.”
