Record £531M investment announced to improve GP access

HEALTH Secretary Neil Gray has announced record funding of more than £531M to support General Practice across Scotland, with the aim of improving access to GP services in areas including Argyll and Bute.

The investment is intended to boost staff numbers and capacity, support day-to-day operations, and make it easier for patients to secure appointments with their local GP.

According to the latest figures, the number of GPs across Scotland has increased, and plans are also being developed to introduce new walk-in GP clinics offering appointments during evenings and weekends to ease pressure on existing services.

Argyll and Bute MSP Jenni Minto welcomed the funding announcement, describing it as a ‘significant boost’ for primary care locally.

She explained: “This investment will strengthen GP services, support staff, and make it easier for people in Argyll and Bute to access care when they need it.”

The Scottish Government said the record funding reflects its ongoing commitment to improving primary healthcare access, reducing waiting times, and supporting the recruitment and retention of GPs across the country.

Further details on how the funding will be distributed among health boards are expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
