COUNCIL officials have approved an application for work to take place at Rhu’s historic Parish Church tower.
Plans for the tower at the Gareloch Road church include minor repairs being carried out to the four clock faces, and replacement of leadwork to the flat roof.
An appeal was launched by the church’s congregation in 2023 for £90,000 to fund repairs to the stonework tower.
Argyll and Bute Council has now granted listed building consent after only one neutral representation was received from the public.
An officer said in a handling report: “The existing property is a gothic church with entrance tower and lantern. The property is category B listed and is located within the Rhu Conservation Area. It is also noted that Rhu Parish Church is an active community church.
“With regards to the listed building and conservation area policies, it is noted that the proposed repairs are in keeping with the overall character and appearance of the building and its setting within the conservation area.
“It is also considered that the proposed works would not only maintain but also enhance the character and amenity of the surrounding conservation area and existing listed building.
“Historic Environment Scotland were consulted on the proposals, and they have noted that they have no comments to make on the proposals.
“Nevertheless, the Historic Environment Scotland managing change guidance notes relating to conservation areas, external fixtures, external walls and roofs have each been reviewed and it is considered that the proposed repairs to the church tower meet with the aforementioned guidance notes.”
The official added: “Based on the above it is considered that the proposals are in keeping with and enhance the surrounding conservation area and the existing listed building. The proposed works utilise high quality materials and repair methods.”
