Skaters shine at Greenock competition

A GROUP of talented local figure skaters enjoyed success at the Greenock Waterfront figure skating competition, with one taking home gold and others delivering impressive performances across a range of ability categories.

Among the competitors was former Dunoon Grammar School pupil Rhiyanna Stevely, who secured first place in the Inclusive Skating category.

Rhiyanna, who has been skating for eight years and is coached by Cara MacInnes, performed to This is Me from The Greatest Showman. Her routine featured sign language in both the introduction and closing section of the performance.

Joining her at the event were Niamh Mitchell, Willow Fairgrieve-Melucci and Hannah McGavin, who each finished fourth place in their respective categories.

The competition categories are based on skating levels rather than age, meaning competitors of different ages skate alongside others at similar stages of development.

Six-year-old Niamh has been skating since just before her second birthday. Coached by Rowan Simpson, she performed to Under the Sea from The Little Mermaid. Niamh currently competes at Club Level 2.

Willow, 12, is a pupil at Dunoon Grammar School and has been skating since she was five. Coached by Fiona MacKenzie, she performed to Vampire by Olivia Rodrigo at Club Level 3.

Former DGS pupil Hannah McGavin (18) began skating at Ayr Ice Rink at the age of three. Hannah, who now studies Social Sciences at James Watt College, competed at Club Level 4.

After progressing through 13 teaching levels, skaters can move into the figure skating club structure, where levels run from one to six and are grouped by ability rather than age.

The Greenock competition provided a valuable opportunity for the local skaters to perform and compete, with strong results and experience gained across the board.
