Storm Bram delivers giant fridge to Argyll nature reserve

HOLY Loch Nature Reserve ecologist Dr Neil Hammatt is used to bizarre items washing up on the shoreline but even he was taken aback when a giant fridge made an appearance during Storm Bram on Tuesday.

Dr Hammatt explained: This is the season for deliveries of all sorts but it was still a big shock when this particular white good drifted ashore at the head of the loch.

Unfortunately, it highlights the levels of rubbish that are dumped in the Clyde and surrounding lochs, much of it ending up on the fringes of places like our nature reserve and impacting on the biodiversity and habitats of countless species.

A more immediate issue is how we get rid of it. Its a very heavy object and will take a few people to remove it so any help or advice would be gratefully received.

The Holy Loch Nature Reserve, based in Sandbank near Dunoon, is a unique habitat comprising of sixty acres of unspoilt Scottish saltmarsh and unique Celtic rainforest. Fed by freshwater flowing down from the mountains of Cowal into a much-loved sea loch, this unique reserve sits where the Highlands meet the River Clyde.

The reserve is home to over 2,000 insect species and iconic wildlife such as Kingfishers, Ospreys and Little Egrets, all easily viewed from the reserves bird hide.
