Upper Cowal Bowling Club welcomed a large turnout of members, friends and representatives from kindred clubs for its annual Opening of the Green on Saturday, April 18.
The popular event saw attendees enjoy the club’s hospitality throughout the afternoon, both on and off the green, as the new season got underway in fine style.
The opening ceremony was led by club president Helen McVicar, who was introduced to those present by immediate past president Eilidh Simpson. Also taking part in the proceedings were vice-president Tom Hamilton, Rosie Campbell who delivered the first jack and bowls of the season, and Bridie Ferguson, who spoke on behalf of the visiting clubs.
Following the formalities, 28 enthusiastic bowlers took to the green to compete in an eight-end whappenshaw, which followed an introductory spider competition. Proceeds of 100 from the spider, for which the prize was a bottle donated by the president, were raised for local charity CHATS, selected by Cathy Smith.
Off the green, a generous spread of donated catering was enjoyed by those in attendance, before a well-supported raffle, also made possible by contributions from members and friends, rounded off the day’s activities.
President Helen McVicar extended a vote of thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the event before presenting prizes to the day’s winners. Alan McCorquodale claimed victory in the spider, while David Simmonds and Alex Kennedy triumphed in the whappenshaw.
Gratitude was also expressed for favourable weather conditions, which held throughout the day and allowed the celebrations to be enjoyed to the full.
