WESTERN Ferries has marked a major milestone in its fleet expansion, with shipbuilders APCL Cammell Laird laying the keel for the company’s newest car and passenger ferry — a vessel that will serve the Gourock–Dunoon route and strengthen one of Cowal’s most important lifeline services.
The keel-laying ceremony, which was held on Tuesday, formally signals the start of construction on the MV Sound of Scalpay, the first of two new ferries ordered by the Dunoon-based operator earlier this year.
A sister ship, the MV Sound of Sleat, will follow, with both vessels due for delivery in Autumn 2026.
The multi-million-pound contract is a repeat order of the hugely successful design that produced the Sound of Seil and Sound of Soay in 2013 — vessels that now form the backbone of Western Ferries’ four-ship fleet and deliver more than 32,000 sailings every year, including on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
The new 50-metre double-ended ferries will each carry 40 cars and 220 passengers, operating between Hunters Quay and McInroy’s Point. The design has been upgraded to improve fuel efficiency, reduce energy use and enhance comfort for passengers and crew.
Cammell Laird has refined the hull, upgraded onboard systems and improved superstructure aesthetics to ensure environmental and operational gains.
Western Ferries chairman, James Denham, said: “The progress made by Cammell Laird has been exceptional, reaching this stage in just a few short months is a fantastic achievement and a real testament to the dedication of everyone involved. We all remain confident that the new vessels will be delivered on time and on budget.
“This investment demonstrates Western Ferries’ continued commitment to our employees and the communities we serve. Once operational, the MV Sound of Scalpay and MV Sound of Sleat will further enhance our reputation for reliability and resilience in providing essential lifeline ferry services.”
David McGinley, Group CEO of APCL, said the new order is a significant vote of confidence in the shipyard. He said: “It is a point of pride that we welcome back Western Ferries as a returning customer. Contracts such as these underpin the ongoing success of APCL Cammell Laird and the wider Group. We look forward to continuing the construction of MV Sound of Scalpay and the MV Sound of Sleat over the coming months.”
Western Ferries remains one of the largest private employers in Dunoon, with 60 of its 70 staff living locally. The company supports emergency services out of hours, operates daily all year round, and sponsors a wide range of local events, charities and youth groups.
