COUNCIL staff are set to consider requirements for a new ferry to serve Jura after nearly £20 million of Scottish Government funding over two years was allocated.
Argyll and Bute Council workers have also completed work on installing a new safety barrier in a Campbeltown street, it has been reported.
The update from the authority’s roads and infrastructure services department also features the renaming of a playpark in memory of a former councillor.
The report, dated Friday, March 20, said: “Next week we will commence some overlay, and patching works will commence on Monday on the B823 from Stewarton to Drumlemble.
“This is in advance of any future works that will be incorporated into next year’s capital programme.
“Work was completed this week installing the new safety barrier on Summerhill Crescent (in Campbeltown). On Islay the team are continuing with the new footway at Bruichladdich.
“The harbour board on Thursday, March 19 noted funding of £19.6m in total from the Scottish Government – over the next two years – for a new Jura ferry and any additional infrastructure required to support it.
“Work will now begin to scope out the requirements for a unique vessel that will serve the community and the economy of Jura for the next 20 to 30 years.
“This will cover things like capacity levels, fuel type, crew size and consideration of the waters she will sail in.
“Changes required for the shoreside infrastructure at Feolin and Port Askaig, to meet the requirements of the new vessel, will also be part of the works.”
The report added: “This week, in memory of former Councillor John McAlpine, his wife Karen and son Sam unveiled a new plaque officially naming Tarbert playpark in his honour. John was instrumental in campaigning to secure funding for the park’s recent upgrades in 2025.
“This week, we met with the South Islay Development Trust and the contractor to discuss the improvement works being progressed through the allocated government funding (at Port Ellen playpark).
“The plans now include a new wheelchair-accessible roundabout, a new access path leading to it, and a shelter.”
