Inverclyde consults on expanding ASN provision

Inverclyde residents have been encouraged to contribute to two statutory consultations on plans to increase additional support needs (ASN) provision for primary age pupils in the area.

The council has said the existing offering at centres, including Craigmarloch School and All Saints Primary School, has reached capacity, so King’s Oak and St Andrew’s primary schools are being explored as potential locations.

A statutory consultation for each of the suggested sites must take place to allow people to share their views on the proposals before a final decision is made.

The decision to move ahead with this process was agreed at the local authority’s education and communities committee on Tuesday, January 20.

In the aftermath of the meeting, Councillor Jim Clocherty, convener of the committee, said: “The demand for specialist teaching and learning environments is increasing and the proposal to create new ASN bases at King’s Oak and St Andrew’s primaries would allow us to continue to meet the needs of those who need extra support.

“These two new locations would also make ASN services more accessible, particularly to people in the east end of Greenock, Gourock and surrounding areas and make best use of available space in our education estate.

“We’ve increased ASN capacity at secondary level in the last year or so and now we have an opportunity to enhance primary provision.”

If the plans progress, the new ASN bases at King’s Oak and St Andrew’s are expected to be available for the start of the school term in August 2026.

The formal consultation relating to each site can be accessed at inverclyde.gov.uk/your-council-your-say/live-consultations/primary-additional-support-needs-asn-expansion-consultation and will run until Wednesday, March 18.

A series of information sessions will be held at King’s Oak on Monday, February 23, at 2pm and 6pm and St Andrew’s on Thursday, February 26, at 1.30pm and 6pm.
