£66,000 investment planned for Greenock community laundrette

More than £60,000 will go towards the refurbishment of the laundrette at Auchmountain Resource Centre in Greenock – if Inverclyde councillors approve the investment next week.

The community service at the building on Burnhead Street provides subsidised washing and drying facilities to more than 1,500 residents who are experiencing financial hardship.

However, it has reached the end of its “operational lifespan” and money is set to be spent on four washing machines, two dryers and the replacement of pipework and flooring.

Elected members will be asked to approve the allocation at a meeting of the council’s policy and resources committee on Tuesday afternoon.

A report by the interim director of culture, communities and education resources explained: “The community laundrette at Auchmountain Resource Centre provides subsidised washing and drying facilities to more than 1,500 residents experiencing financial hardship.

“It is proposed that funding of £66,000 be allocated to support the refurbishment and upgrade of the existing laundrette, which has now reached the end of its operational lifespan.

“This investment will facilitate the installation of four new washing machines and two new dryers, along with the replacement of associated pipework and flooring within the facility and associated warranties for two years.

“The enhanced provision will also increase capacity, enabling the service to better support families with larger laundry requirements, including bedding and school uniforms.”

The report continued: “All associated revenue costs for the ongoing operation of the facility are already included within the communities budget.

“Officers are working closely with the centre’s management committee to establish a revised agreement regarding the annual revenue income received by the centre, ensuring the sustainability of ongoing operational costs.”
