PLANS for a war memorial to be situated near a tearoom at Benderloch have been given the go-ahead by council officers.
Ardchattan Community Council’s proposal for land at the turning circle, adjacent to the Ben Lora tearoom, was granted planning permission by Argyll and Bute Council.
Only one neutral representation was received by the authority during the planning process, with no outright expressions of objection or support.
A planning officer said in a handling report: “The proposed war memorial will take a conical form with a flat top; positioned on a concrete plinth.
“The proposal memorial, with a footprint measuring approximately 2.56 square metres and a maximum height of approximately 2.9 metres, will be constructed of locally sourced natural stone and will feature a dressed stone panel to the north, south and east elevations. The application proposes to extend the existing bitumen to the memorial.
“This application is seeking to secure permission for the erection of a war memorial located within an existing vehicle turning circle, which is not considered to be a significant travel generating use or a proposal where it is considered important to monitor travel patterns resulting from the development.
“The access to the site is situated off the A828 trunk road. Transport Scotland have been consulted on the application and advised that they do not propose to advise against the granting of permission.”
The officer added: “The war memorial as proposed within this application would be of a small scale and would be of a suitable form and design for the rural location such that it would integrate appropriately within the wider landscape setting.”
