Upgrade for Kilmalcom church

A series of planned works at the historic Kilmacolm Parish Church have been given the go ahead by Inverclyde Council, it has been confirmed.

A number of improvements will be carried out at the B-listed building in High Street after the relevant permissions were granted subject to conditions.

These include the installation of two conservation-style roof windows and an enclosed internal glass entrance lobby as well as the formation of an accessible toilet and a separate additional toilet.

A report of handling by the local authority said: “The rooflight windows are located on a prominent public elevation, however, they are located on a subordinate single-storey element of the building.

“The rooflight windows are conservation style which are of appropriate scale, position and design and will be fitted flush.

“This demonstrates a clear understanding of the building’s contribution to the existing historic character of the wider Kilmacolm Cross conservation area.”

It continued: “The internal alterations proposed are considered to present minor changes to smaller, more utilitarian and modern spaces/rooms within the building.

“The position of alterations, like for like repair and replication of existing doors has been carefully considered to not disrupt existing features of character and the plan form and layout of the principal spaces within [the] building are preserved.

“It is considered that the alterations are minor and preserve the historic character of the building and its reasons for listing, yet also enable its sympathetic alteration and practical adaptation to accommodate its active and practical use of the building for use by the public.”

The church remains in use as an ecclesiastical building, according to the report, and includes the adjacent Kidston Hall and grounds with parking.

The main building is of Gothic revival style with a slated roof, harled render finish and stone detailing, battle tower, circular tower and incorporated remnants of a 13th century chancel.

In its official decision notice, the council confirmed the proposal was in line with the provisions of the development plan.
