Shopfront grants open for conservation areas across Argyll and Bute

BUSINESS owners in conservation areas across Argyll and Bute can now apply for grants of up to £15,000 to spruce up their shopfronts and buildings.

The support comes from the Scottish Government’s Crown Estate Fund, which helps sustain coastal communities through projects focused on the environment, community, climate change and economic development.

In August, councillors agreed to ring-fence £150,000 from Argyll and Bute’s £800,000 Crown Estate allocation specifically for capital improvements to business frontages.

The fund is now open to applicants in Dunoon, Rothesay, Tarbert, Inveraray and Lochgilphead as well as other areas in Argyll.

Eligible works can include repairs and restoration to traditional features, painting, signage and lightingaimed at enhancing the look of high streets and supporting local trade.

The council’s depute policy lead for business development, councillor Jan Brown, said: “Supporting the heritage of our towns and villages is a priority for the council. Enhancing shopfronts in our conservation areas not only supports the unique history and identity of our towns but it can also attract more footfall and contribute to long-term economic sustainability across Argyll and Bute.

“Through this Crown Estate funding, we’re giving local business owners and tenants the opportunity to invest in their premises in ways that respect and enhance their unique character. This is an investment not only in buildings, but in the long-term resilience and appeal of our communities.”

Application forms and full guidance are available on the Invest in Argyll and Bute website. The deadline for applications is Friday 21 November 2025.
