INTEREST is being invited from any parties who wish to start up a Men’s Shed group in the Kirkmichael area of Helensburgh.
A derelict Portakabin is in the process of being removed, with a community group now proposing an open day in January to discuss the future of the site.
Previous efforts to find a home for a Men’s Shed in Helensburgh had proven unsuccessful before the leader of those efforts, Brian Mackay, passed away in March 2023.
Helensburgh Community Council has also published its own updates on its work to renovate the Portakabin site.
The details feature in separate reports which will go before Argyll and Bute Council’s Helensburgh and Lomond community planning group at its meeting on Tuesday, November 11.
The community council said: “With the help of David Hagerty (of the council) and Councillor Gemma Penfold (Conservative, Helensburgh and Lomond South) we have been supporting Kirkmichael Community Development Group in their efforts to dispose of a derelict Portakabin in the play area.
“[The Portakabin] was previously used as a community meeting place but is now is a dangerous state due to vandalism.”
Meanwhile, a report by the council’s community development team said: “Kirkmichael Community Development Group (KCDG) are in process of clearing dilapidated Portacabin from the playground area.
“An initial clearance of rubble has occurred with the group leading this; working with community development, the KCDG have secured a mixture of funds from Argyll and Bute Council, Dunbritton Housing, Scottish Fire [and Rescue] Service and Police Scotland to remove the remainder of the structure.
“The group are proposing an open day (date TBC) in January to discuss future developments and are keen to hear from anyone who may be interested in developing a Men’s Shed.”
