Artists across Bute to open their studio doors this summer

ARTISTS and makers from across the Isle of Bute will throw open the doors to their studios next month as the popular Bute Studio Trail returns for another year.

Organised by the Isle of Bute Artists Collective (IBAC), the annual event will take place on Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19, giving visitors the chance to meet local artists, explore their creative spaces and purchase original works directly from the people who made them.

This year’s trail will feature 34 artists and makers exhibiting at 24 venues across the island, showcasing an extensive range of artistic disciplines.

Visitors can expect to see everything from paintings, drawings and sculpture to pottery, fused glass, jewellery, woodturning, photography, upholstery, model making, woven and knitted textiles, stitched hangings, hats, puppets and sound art.

Several artists will also be available to discuss commissions for bespoke pieces.

As well as viewing completed works, many participating artists will be demonstrating the techniques, materials and tools they use, offering visitors an insight into the creative process behind their work.

IBAC chairman William Lindsay said the event had become a highlight of Bute’s cultural calendar.

“The Studio Trail is a success story every year,” he said.

“Visitors come to Bute, engage with interesting and enthusiastic makers, and take home original and unique works. It is a hugely enjoyable way to see and learn more about art and craft directly from their makers.”

Many of the participating venues are within walking distance of Rothesay ferry terminal, while others can be reached by local bus, bicycle or the island’s hop-on, hop-off tour bus, allowing visitors to combine the trail with an opportunity to explore more of Bute’s scenery and attractions.

Admission to all venues is free, with Studio Trail guide brochures available both in print and online ahead of the event.

The Bute Studio Trail takes place on Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19.
