£430k price tag as Cowal countdown begins

THE cost of staging the Cowal Highland Gathering has soared to around £430,000 as organisers enter the final fortnight countdown to this year’s event.

The figure has been revealed as the Gathering’s discounted local ticket campaign comes to an end, following what organisers described as a fantastic response from the Cowal community.

With rising operational costs continuing to put pressure on major events, organisers say the support of local residents, businesses, sponsors and volunteers is becoming increasingly important to securing the future of one of Scotland’s biggest Highland gatherings.

David Mitchell, chair of the Cowal Highland Gathering, said: “The support we receive from our local community is something we never take for granted.

“Every ticket purchased helps us stage this internationally renowned event, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who continues to get behind the Gathering.”

It cost approximately £430,000 to stage the event in 2025, with organisers working throughout the year to keep costs under control while facing continued increases in the expense of delivering the Gathering.

The discounted advance ticket campaign has now closed, with Saturday tickets currently priced at £30 in advance, rising to £35 on the day.

Primary school-aged children will continue to receive free admission, while more than 500 free tickets have already been issued to youngsters aged between 12 and 16.

And with just two weeks until thousands of visitors are expected to descend on Dunoon, preparations for the 2026 Gathering are gathering pace.

A total of 21 pipe bands from across Scotland are set to compete in the prestigious Cowal Pipe Band Championships, while entries for the Highland Dancing competitions have increased again this year.

The heavy athletics competition, sponsored by Bakkafrost, will also return as part of the packed programme of traditional Highland Games competition.

Away from the competition arenas, the Top Field will host a programme of family entertainment and activities throughout the day.

Music will also play a major part in this year’s Gathering weekend.

Friday’s Gig at the Gathering will feature the Ross Miller Band, Rhuvaal and local favourites Heron Valley, with combined Gig and Saturday Gathering tickets still available.

On Saturday, local ceilidh favourites The Inverhooley Ceilidh Band will get proceedings under way in the Cowal Music Tent, followed by DnA.

Tide Lines will then headline the tent as the hugely popular Scottish band celebrates its 10th anniversary.

The Gathering will once again end with its traditional fireworks display, sponsored by Western Ferries.

Mr Mitchell said the scale of the event would not be possible without the contribution made by the wider community.

He added: “The Cowal Highland Gathering belongs to the whole community.

“It is only possible because of the support we receive from our volunteers, sponsors, competitors, performers, local businesses and everyone who buys a ticket.

“Thank you for continuing to support this very special event. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back to Dunoon in just two weeks’ time.”
