A SIX thousand-year-old settlement in Glendaruel is set to be brought back to life using modern 3D technology.
Digital heritage consultant and archaeologist Marcus Abbott will visit Stronafian Community Forest at the end of September to create digital visualisations of the ancient village of Auchategan and the Lephinkil chambered cairn.
Using techniques including drone photography and photogrammetry, Marcus will produce 3D models and films designed to help archaeologists and the public better understand how the two sites may once have looked and been used.
Auchategan was occupied from the early Neolithic period, through the Bronze and Iron Ages and into medieval and post-medieval times, while the chambered cairn dates from the Neolithic period.
Today, however, much of what remains of the structures appears as mounds of stone.
Project co-ordinator Debbie Kirby said: “All that can be seen of the sites now are mounds of stone, open and exposed to the elements, from the collapsed structures.
“It takes a lot of imagination to visualise what these stones, both upstanding and subterranean, would have looked like in the past, and this is where Marcus’s film will help us.”
The finished films are expected to be completed by the end of the year and will be screened locally.
They will also be available through Dunoon’s Castle House Museum, online and through QR codes installed on interpretation boards at the archaeological sites.
The project has been made possible with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Marcus will be working on site on Wednesday, September 30, Thursday, October 1 and Friday, October 2, when he will also share his knowledge of digital filmmaking with those interested in the project.
