THE ARGYLL Province Curling Club had a busy end to the season, with their Championships, Last Bite trophy, AGM and prizegiving being held in recent days. The five curling clubs from Bute, Dunoon, Argyll, Millport, Oban and Tighnabruaich play regularly in the Argyll Province, and in keeping with the ethos of curling, their matches are as friendly as they are competitive.
The Argyll Province Championships were held at Greenacres Ice Rink on March 7, the final being won by Oban CC, although it was neck and neck with Millport CC until the last couple of ends. Millport CC did, however, manage to lift the Last Bite trophy a few days later at the Waterfront in Greenock.
The final match of the season was followed by a well-attended tea, AGM and prize-giving at the Tontine Hotel. The prizes were presented by Dr Sandy Smith of Dunoon CC, and the incoming Argyll Province president, Fergus Boyle of Millport CC, thanked the outgoing president, Ian Provan of Tighnabruaich CC, for all his work on behalf of the province over the past two years.
There has been increased interest in curling since the excellent recent coverage of the Olympic teams in action, and anyone wanting to try their hand and see if this is a sport they might want to take up should look at the trycurling.com website to find sessions for beginners.
