COLGLEN took on National Division side Bute at the Clachan in the first round of the Macaulay Cup at the weekend, as the sides separated by the Kyles of Bute locked horns.
The Glen were lethargic early on, allowing Bute to get the upper hand when Josh Cowan scored on six minutes. He scored again 20 minutes later with an absolute cracker from 20 yards out into the top right-hand corner.
ColGlen were slightly better at the start of the second half but never really tested the island keeper Stewart Stirling when it counted, and with a break upfield Robert Lowrie scored to make it three for the visitors, putting the game beyond any doubt.
That said, ColGlen did have a brighter spell later on in the game and team captain Murray McClymont ventured forward from his half-back position to send a sailing lob over Stirling into Bute’s goal. This, coupled with another tireless performance, saw McClymont, who is sponsored by Ardyne Organic Farm LTD, unsurprisingly pick up man of the match. Ollie Adrian, Brandon Wilson and Hunter Black all put in impressive performances as they stepped up from the second team on the day.
ColGlen were very grateful to former player Ally Edgar Plumbing and Heating for sponsoring the match.
Ultimately, Glen manager Ronnie MacVicar will be frustrated with their latest result. However, with a number of players expected to return to the squad this coming Saturday, he will expect a better performance as they travel away to take on Caberfeidh in the Premiership.
