COLGLEN Shinty Club suffered Celtic Cup semi-final heartbreak after surrendering an early two-goal lead to lose out to Glasgow Mid-Argyll despite a spirited second-half performance.
The Glen made the perfect start and raced into a 2-0 advantage thanks to early strikes from Neily McNaughton and substitute Brandon Wilson. Their fast opening had Glasgow Mid-Argyll on the back foot and looked to have put ColGlen firmly in control of the contest.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically after Glasgow Mid-Argyll were awarded a penalty when the ball was kicked into the dee. The spot hit proved a turning point in the match, allowing the Glasgow side back into the contest before they added two more quick goals ahead of half-time to take a 3-2 lead.
ColGlen responded strongly after the restart and pushed hard for an equaliser, throwing everything forward in search of a route back into the game. Despite their pressure and improved second-half display, Glasgow Mid-Argyll defended resolutely and managed to hold out to secure their place in the final.
It proved a frustrating afternoon for the Glen, who will feel their strong opening deserved more reward.
There was some consolation for Murray McClymont, who was named ColGlen’s man of the match following another impressive performance.
The defeat was compounded by injury news concerning James Hamilton, who has been ruled out for at least four weeks after suffering a broken thumb.
