Council report shows attainment gains since 2021

PUPILS in Argyll and Bute are in line with the national averages on Curriculum for Excellence achievement, a report has revealed.

The area was behind the Scotland-wide figure in most respects during the 2021/22 school year, but figures for the 2024/25 year have shown it is in line (within one per cent, either ahead or behind) of the national figure in most cases.

S3 pupils at level four have also been over one per cent ahead of the national figure in all five categories – listening and talking, reading, writing, literacy and numeracy.

Numbers are also displayed in the report for primaries one, four and seven, along with S3 pupils at level three.

The report will go before the council’s community services committee at its meeting on Thursday, March 5.

Primary one pupils are shown as ‘in line’ in all five categories, while primary four youngsters are ‘ahead’ in reading and ‘in line’ for the other four.

Primary sevens are reported as ‘in line’ for listening and talking and reading, but ‘behind’ (more than one per cent below the national figure) in the other three categories.

S3 pupils at level three are documented as being ‘ahead’ at numeracy and ‘in line’ for all four other categories.

In 2021/22, the only categories not reported as ‘behind’ were reading and writing for S3 pupils at level three, which were ‘in line’.

Executive director Douglas Hendry said: “[The report] evidences progress made against national averages across a number of literacy and numeracy measures and highlights improvement that has been made in all measures when compared to attainment in session 2021/22.

“It also highlights the fact that combined attainment averages for Argyll and Bute schools are either in line or ahead of the national averages in 25 out of a possible 30 measures; demonstrating an improving picture.

“We commend the hard work of learners, school staff and the central team in securing progress in attainment across the Broad General Education (BGE) from P1-S3.

“Central officers continue to take forward the programme of support and challenge with schools across the authority, involving a range of actions and measures to support schools to secure further improvement in attainment and achievement.

“Increasing attainment and achievement, and ensuring that all young people achieve to their potential, regardless of location, circumstance or potential barriers, is at the heart of the work of the education service.”
