ROADS in Helensburgh and Lomond are set for temporary traffic regulation orders that will see 20mph speed limits implemented.
A council official has also confirmed that discussions will take place in the three other administrative areas of Argyll and Bute regarding similar measures as part of ‘Project 20’.
The scheme is part of the Scottish Government’s aspiration of introducing 20mph speed restrictions in Scotland.
It has not been made known which roads in Helensburgh and Lomond will be subject to a temporary order, or exactly when they will be implemented. Council officials have held discussions with councillors for the area along with community councils.
Discussion took place at a meeting of the authority’s environment, development and infrastructure committee on Thursday, March 19.
Councillor Peter Wallace (Conservative, Isle of Bute) said: “We have obviously had engagement with members in Helensburgh, but for the rest of us it is difficult. You are asking us to approve something we have not seen the detail of.”
Hugh O’Neill, the council’s network and standards manager, responded: “We are asking for permission now to go ahead with Helensburgh and Lomond. It is temporary traffic orders right now; we are not going in with a full order.
“We will have engagement with each of the four areas, but these are temporary measures currently.”
Councillor Wallace then asked: “How long does a temporary order stand for?”
Mr O’Neill said: “It can stand for 18 months, but we hope to revisit these within six months.”
The committee then unanimously agreed that the project proceeded to temporary traffic regulation orders.
